Aussie Photographers deemed not good enough to sell their own country. -- on Thursday, January 19 2006
Following shortly after the controversy over Leichhardt council’s aborted attempt to hire Swedish super model turned photographer Helena Christianson, Australian photographers have been handed another major put-down with news that Tourism Australia’s next big advertising campaign is to be shot be a foreigner.

According to recent reports, Australian photographers have been passed over in favour of Britain’s Pete Seaward. The campaign, orchestrated by advertising agency M&C Saatchi has opted to import Seaward rather than commission one of the highly regarded locals shortlisted in the selection process.

North Sullivan, President of The Association of Australian Commercial and Media Photographers (ACMP) that represents Australia’s advertising photographers, says “This is a slap in the face for Australian creative talent. Australian photographers are considered to be amongst the finest in the world and yet the advertising people behind the ad campaign seem to have little regard for this fact”. Sullivan continues “This is akin to hiring an American Pop Star to sing the national anthem at our Grand Final. The decision to hire Seaward is most unfortunate and appears at odds with the ATC’s policy of requiring the country’s premier tourism imagery be produced Australian photographers”.

There are indications that suggest the Australian’s were never even seriously considered for the job but were being sough to produce secondary material only. Sullivan feels it is “Just another sad example of the ‘cultural cringe’ raising it’s ugly head again. The thought that home grown talent is not good enough to sell their own country is deplorable”.

Seaward is well thought of within the photographic community. “We are not questioning Seawards ability, only the appropriateness of his appointment” says Sullivan. “Whatever the motivation, we feel an Australian photographer would ultimately be better suited to the task. It is after all our country and we know it better than anyone. We know the light, we know its people and we understand the landscape. This is not about seeing Australia through outside eyes, its about capturing the heart and soul of this magnificent country.
