THE
PRESIDENT'S
AWARD

The ACMP has two awards: One being the honour of being included in The Collection, the other, a little known award, called THE PRESIDENT'S AWARD. In the past nine years it has been presented five times. The first was awarded to North Sullivan (see picture), then Nancy Cohen, Chris Shain, Phil Fischer and George Farrell.

In the past the award has been traditionally given to members who have served the membership in one way or another, sometimes by banging the bath tub loudly enough to be heard by the residents of 'Capital Hill' and by others for quietly slogging away on behalf of the membership, unobserved, uncomplaining and without recognition.

Each President of the ACMP has had a different style. A different set of priorities. I am no different. This year I plan to step outside the circle of tradition and give five President's Awards. One of these steps still further outside the circle, by being awarded to a photographer who is not a member of the ACMP.

The President's Award No 1 goes to Milton Wordly (who invented this award) who is going to give himself a well deserved rest and will be passing on the reins of The Collection to another. Nobody during my time in this chair and, for that matter, well before it, is more deserving of this award than Milton. My best wishes and heartfelt thanks for his counsel, enthusiasm and encouragement go with him.

The President's Award No 2 goes to Gavin Blue - one of those quiet, hard working souls who relentlessly beaver on behind the scenes making The Collection a reality, usually without thanks or recognition.

The President's Award No 3 goes to Stuart Crossett who continues to contribute hundreds of hours of his own time on your behalf on The Collection. My thanks to him for his quick wit and straight shooting.

The President's Award No 4 goes to James Domingo with a huge thank-you from me for the enormous effort he has put into the NSW chapter over the last two years.

The President's Award No 5 goes to Grant Matthews, not a member of the Society but deserving of our recognition for having single-mindedly taken on Mr Packer's organisation over the moral misuse of one of his images. He put his money where his mouth was. Had he lost the resulting court case, it might have cost him $60,000. By winning, he publicised the issue of moral rights for every photographer.

There are now ten President's Awards.
